The hard part: staying on the same frame
"Everyone press play on three" falls apart in seconds. Networks buffer differently, someone pauses to grab a drink, another person seeks back to catch a line they missed. Within a minute the room is scattered across the timeline and the reactions stop making sense.
Real sync means the video's state — playing or paused, and exactly where in the timeline — has to be shared across everyone and kept in agreement continuously. Not once at the start; the whole time.
One host, one source of truth
Watch Mode picks a single host as the source of truth for playback. When the host plays, pauses, or seeks, that action is broadcast to everyone in the room over the same real-time connection that already powers chat and presence — a lightweight message, not a video stream. Every other viewer's player receives the new state and matches it.
Because only the host drives playback, there's never a tug-of-war between two people's timelines. And control is casual to hand off: anyone can take control and become the new host, so the party doesn't stall when someone steps away from the keyboard.
Correcting drift, quietly
Even with a shared play/pause state, players drift. A slow connection, a dropped frame, a background tab being throttled — small differences pile up. So each viewer's player also checks itself against the host's position and, when it falls out of step by more than about half a second, nudges itself back into line.
The correction is small and constant enough that you don't notice it happening — you just stay together. Pauses and seeks are exact, because they're explicit events; the drift correction quietly handles everything in between.
Three kinds of sources, one experience
Not every video works the same way, so Watch Mode uses a small player adapter that speaks to whatever you paste:
- YouTube links load in YouTube's own IFrame player, and ClutchTick drives its play, pause and seek to keep the room in sync.
- Direct video files (.mp4, .webm) play in a plain HTML5 video element — the same host-controlled sync, no third party in the loop.
- Twitch channels and VODs load in Twitch's official embed. A live channel is inherently in sync — everyone's watching the same live edge — so it just works.
Whatever the source, the controls and the feel are identical. You paste a link, the room loads it, and the host presses play.
Reactions and chat, in the same window
A watch party is social, so the video isn't the only thing in the room. Emoji reactions float up over the video for everyone at once, so a great moment gets a live wave of 🔥. A toggleable chat sidebar sits beside the player for the running commentary — the stuff you'd normally shout at the screen. Both ride the same real-time channel as the sync, so they land instantly.
Kept separate from the call
Here's a design choice that matters: the synced player is deliberately isolated from the voice and video call. Your mic, camera and the call keep doing their thing; the watch overlay runs alongside them. That separation means the video sync can't hiccup your call, and a call reconnect can't stall the video — two systems, each doing one job well.
